John's Love Revised

John is a kind husband and his love for his wife is evident to her throughout The Yellow Wallpaper. John does what he thinks is best for his wife and brings her out to the country to rest. Even though the narrator dislikes her room, she stays where John tells her to since he “is very caring and loving” (12). The narrator would not have said those things about her husband if she didn't believe they were true. Even as the narrator begins her descent into insanity, her belief that John adores her stays the same. She says that John “loves [her] dearly, and hates to have [her] sick” (21). John not only cherishes his wife the way she is, but he wants her to get better. Although “it is so hard [for the narrator] to talk to John about [her] case” it is only “because he is so wise, and because he loves [her] so” (23). It can be difficult for any person to talk to someone she loves about her problems, and that is the same for the narrator and John. It is obvious to the narrator that John loves her, and that is vital to any marriage.
